Using MagicBand+ on a Disney Cruise: Everything You Need to Know

Do MagicBands work on Disney Cruises?

Yes, but only MagicBand+.

Older MagicBands (the original MagicBand and MagicBand 2) do NOT work on Disney Cruise Line. If you want to use a band onboard, it must be MagicBand+.

While MagicBand+ is optional on Disney Cruise Line, it’s a fun and convenient addition for many families that makes the cruise experience even smoother.

What can you use MagicBand+ for on a Disney Cruise Sailing?

They do not replace your Key to the World card completely, but they can be used for many onboard functions and activities.

Once onboard, MagicBand+ can be used for:

  • Opening your stateroom door
  • Checking in for rotational dining
  • Making onboard purchases, which are charged to your stateroom account
  • Scanning for certain activities and kids’ clubs
  • Interactive games and experiences on the ship
  • Special light-up moments and surprises around the ship, such as dining rooms, during fireworks, in the atrium, and kids’ clubs
  • On some sailings, MagicBand+ may be used during the boarding and re-boarding process, but guests should always carry their Key to the World card, as it is still required in many ports.

Please be aware that you may still be asked for your Key to the World card in certain situations. MagicBand+ does not replace passports, IDs, or port documentation.

Advantages of using MagicBand+

Think of MagicBand+ as a convenience and fun upgrade, not a required item.

  • No need to carry a card everywhere onboard
  • They are waterproof!
  • Easy stateroom access for kids. Also, great for kids who tend to lose cards
  • Faster check-ins at dining and activities
  • Fun interactive elements that add to the onboard experience
  • Familiar to families who already use MagicBands at the parks

Where to purchase a MagicBand+

You can purchase MagicBand+ in a few places:

  • Onboard the ship.
  • In the parks or Disney Springs before your cruise.

Just so you know, if you purchase a MagicBand+ on the ship, it will be called a DisneyBand+. They are the same thing and work the same way.

If you already own a MagicBand+ or are purchasing a new one, make sure to link it to your Disney Cruise reservation. Let me know if you have questions on how to do this.

Are MagicBand+ required on Disney Cruises?

No. MagicBand+ is completely optional on Disney Cruises.

Every guest will still receive a Key to the World card, and you can use that card for everything onboard if you prefer. Many families mix and match, with adults using cards and kids using MagicBands.

For even more details, Disney Cruise Line has a full MagicBand+ FAQ available here.

My advice to families

If your family already loves MagicBands from the parks, or if you like the convenience of wearing your “room key” on your wrist, MagicBand+ is a great add-on.

If you prefer to keep things simple (or don’t want to purchase MagicBand+), the Key to the World card works perfectly fine.

If you’re not sure whether MagicBand+ makes sense for your sailing, I’m happy to help you decide based on your ship, itinerary, and family needs. Just leave a comment below, and I can answer any questions you have.

Please note that MagicBand+ is not supported on the Disney Adventure.
